A distinctive property of UHMWPE compared to other polymers is its structure with extremely long and highly entangled molecular chains, which makes it resistant to wear. This is one main reason why UHMWPE has been so successful on implant bearing surfaces. Furthermore, UHMWPE is biocompatible and stable in the body.
