Species of Zoanthid coral (e.g. Palythoa species and Zoanthus species) can contain a highly toxic, naturally-occurring and potentially lethal substance known as Palytoxin. Zoanthid corals are often recommended to new marine aquarium owners because they are considered to be relatively easy to keep.
How do I find my Zoanthus?

- Zoas are brightly colored with contrasting oral disc and tentacles. Zoanthus spp., or zoas, have a distinct sphincter muscle around their oral opening.
- Zoas do not use sediment in their tissue.
- Zoas have a round mouth.
- Zoanthus polyps are embedded in a mat, and are typically smaller than palys.
Is utter chaos ZOA poisonous?
In practice you are not likely to get palytoxin poisoning just by having zoas or palythoa in your home aquarium. It resides in the flesh of the coral so it becomes an issue when the colony is damaged.
Can you touch zoas?
Usually corals, even zoanthid corals, are safe to handle.
Do all zoas have palytoxin?
Most of the common zoas you see (and even some common palys) do not have any dangerous levels of palytoxin, if any at all. Just avoid the big ugly brown ones or any big neon green/purple ones and you’ll be a-ok. Of course, always take precautions and do what you’re most comfortable with.
How fast do ZOA frags grow?
Most of mine grow at about a polyp every few weeks. However, I have a colony that is not invasive by nature but is growing about 1 polyp a day!

Relatively slow for me. I get about 1 new head per polyp every month. And it takes at least a month to get full size.
