What is TAP? TAP provides transition and employment assistance to Soldiers and their adult family members who are transitioning from active duty to being a veteran. Pre-separation planning is a critical part of a Soldier’s transition to civilian life.

When should I start SFL-tap?
TAP begins no later than 365 days prior to transition for those who are separating or retiring. It is recommended retirees begin the transition process at least two years prior to retirement and 18 months for all other transitioning Soldier.

What happens after SFL-tap?
Once you complete all the requirements with SFL-TAP, you will then take your DD-2648 to your base office. If you have fulfilled all the requirements, your Capstone paperwork will then be generated. This is the final document you need in order to actually fulfill the requirement and leave the Army.
What happens to military retirement at age 65?
Once you reach age 65 you are no longer eligible for those programs, you can then purchase Medicare and TRICARE for Life. If you retire from the National Guard or Reserves you can purchase Tricare Retired Reserve until age 60. At that time you can purchase either Tricare Prime, or Select.
