Thomson was named for J. Edgar Thomson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the chief civil engineer and surveyor of the Georgia Railroad, which ran from Augusta to Crawfordville. Thomson was incorporated in Columbia County by the state legislature on February 15, 1854.
