How to get there Take the A696 Jedburgh road north from Newcastle. At Belsay take the Bolam road following it left past Bolam lake. Approx 1 mile along this road, Bolam Fence Houses are on the left at a crossroads. Start:- go past the cottages with care along the track as it is uneven in places.

Bolam lake is a great dog walk, there’s a lake (obviously) with a well maintained path around it, some great wooded areas and some open grassy areas. Great for a picnic as well. Parking is £1.40-2.80, and there are toilets. Very dog friendly.
Where do you park for shaftoe crags?
Park in the field just beyond a cattle grid where the track leads left. there is plenty of room next to the wall. Park near the right hand wall beyond the cattle grid. Across a cattle-grid and the lane leads left and then left again up and over a rise and down to the farm at East Shaftoe Hall.
Is Bolam Lake free?
There are three car parks at Bolam Lake – all open during daylight hours (they are locked at night). Parking is FREE for 1 hour (you still need a ticket) and chargeable for anything over this (see below for prices – correct January 2020 ). Use postcode NE20 0HE and follow the signs.
