How does a Hexbeam work?
A hexagonal beam operates exactly the same way but instead of a driven element that is straight like a dipole, it is a wire bent into the shape of the letter M. The reflector, instead of being straight is also a wire bent into a large U shape.
What is the gain of a hex beam?
Its antenna gain is between 5dBi and 6dBi, the forward/reverse attenuation is up to 20 dB. The hexbeam consists of six arms of non-conductive materials such as fiberglass or plastic pipes, and insulated metallic wire is used to form the elements.
Who invented the Hexbeam?
The original HEXBEAM was developed by Mike Traffie, N1HXA, in the early nineties. It is true that an “M” over “W” configured yagi antenna that resembled a butterfly was earlier tried successfully.
How does a G5RV antenna work?
7 MHz, 40 metres: On 40 metres the G5RV antenna operates using the top section plus nearly 5 metres of the matching section and it operates as a partially folded collinear array with two half waves in phase. Again the antenna presents a reactive load to any transmitter at its input.

Does a G5RV need a BalUn?
Recommendation. A balun or choke should NOT be used on a G5RV wire dipole. The classic G5RV 102 ft. wire dipole consists of 51 ft.
Does a G5RV need a tuner?
The G5RV will require the use of a wide range antenna tuner in the shack.
How long is a G5RV antenna?
G5RV antenna basics
Feeder Type | Length (Imperial) | Length (Metric) |
---|---|---|
Open Wire | 34 ft | 10.36 metres |
TV 75Ω twin | 28 ft | 8,53 metres |
Is the G5RV a good antenna?
Based on models and air testing the G5RV performs quite well as a 5-band antenna. Those bands include 80, 40, 20, 15, and 12 meters. The antenna will NOT work as well as a dipole on any other HF band. By adding a relay and a ground system the G5RV can be made to work quite well as a “T” antenna on 160 meters.
