How is National Insurance changing and what is the Health and Social Care Levy? From April 6, employees, employers and the self-employed will all pay 1.25p more in the pound for NI. From April 2023, the government says National Insurance will return to its old rate.

No, once you have a National Insurance number, you have it for life. You National Insurance number will never expire.
How can I check my NI?
You can find your National Insurance number:
- on your payslip.
- on your P60.
- on letters about your tax, pension or benefits.
- in the National Insurance section of your personal tax account.
What do the first 2 letters of National Insurance number mean?
For example, AB123456C. Your NI number has no personal information about you; it is a randomly allocated reference number. The prefix is simply two letters that are allocated to each new series of NI number.
Can someone else use my National Insurance number?
Do not share your National Insurance number with anyone who does not need it as this might help someone to steal your identity. Remember to keep the letter telling you what your National Insurance number is safe as it is a useful reminder of your number.

You can check your number using your online Personal tax account or on the HMRC App. When you go online you’ll be asked some questions to start with, to confirm who you are. Don’t worry if you can’t get into it on your first attempt, you can try again later.
Do all NI numbers start with letters?
The Prefix All prefixes are valid except: The characters D, F, I, Q, U, and V are not used as either the first or second letter of a NINO prefix. The letter O is not used as the second letter of a prefix. Prefixes BG, GB, KN, NK, NT, TN and ZZ are not to be used.
