Do grommets help glue ear?
For persistent glue ear, grommets are the treatment of choice. Medical treatment with decongestants or steroids isn’t particularly effective unless there are signs of infection or allergy. Antibiotics can help but only in the short term.

The glue ear may come back after the grommets fall out. Grommets usually fall out by themselves. This may take a few months, a year or longer, and you may not notice when it happens. Glue ear returning happens in 1 out of every 3 children.

Often there is no pain. You or your child should avoid getting dirt or soapy water into the ear. Swimming can be started a couple of weeks after the operation, as long as the patient does not dive under the water. We arrange a follow-up appointment for your surgeon to check the position of the grommets.

The fluid often drains away gradually, air returns and hearing then returns to normal. Hearing is back to normal within three months in about 5 in 10 cases. Hearing is back to normal within a year in more than 9 in 10 cases. Glue ear persists for a year or more in a small number of cases.

Temporary side effects:
- The tubes are temporary.
- Infections can occur, with ear discharge, and this is treated with ear drops.
- Tinnitus (noise in the ears) can be better, worse or the same after insertion of tubes.
- Occasionally adults feel worse with tubes than they did before the operation.

Grommet surgery is usually performed under a general anaesthetic where you will be asleep but it can be done awake with a local anaesthetic too. A small opening is made in the ear drum which allows the grommet to be inserted.

Are there any risks? Every operation carries some risk of infection and bleeding, but as the hole in the eardrum is tiny, this risk is very much reduced. Around one in every 100 children may develop a perforated eardrum. If this persists it can be repaired later.

Possible complications of glue ear include ear infections and, where hearing loss is more severe, a minor temporary delay in speech and language development. If left untreated for a long period of time, glue ear can sometimes cause damage to the ear drum (tympanic membrane) requiring surgery.
Why do adults get glue ear?
The upper throat and back of the nasal cavity or Nasopharynx is connected to the middle ear via a canal called the Eustachian tube. Approximately 1/3 of glue ear sufferers are adults. The condition occurs when the Eustachian tube fills with fluid rather than air, usually due to a common cold.
