Both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) do not consider GBS colonization as a contraindication to membrane stripping. Their latest guidelines discuss the risks of membrane stripping in women colonized with GBS.

How much bloody mucus is normal after membrane sweep?

You may also have slight spotting (a small amount of bleeding on your underwear) for up to 3 days. This bleeding can be reddish, pink, or brown and may be mixed with mucus. Spotting and cramping after membrane sweeping are normal.

Birth in a pool is not contraindicated if the woman is a known GBS carrier provided she is offered appropriate IAP. As for all women know to carry GBS during their pregnancy, they should be offered intravenous antibiotics from the start of labour and at intervals (usually 4 hourly) until the baby is born.

Can I labor at home if I have group B strep?

Women who are GBS-positive and get antibiotics at the right time during labor do well, and most don’t pass the infection to their babies. If you are GBS-positive and begin to go into labor, go to the hospital rather than laboring at home.
