Differential probes measure the voltage difference between any two input points in contrast to a single- ended probe, which measures input voltage relative to ground. Differential probes are especially popular for measuring high-frequency signals or signals where neither are referenced to ground.
Why do we need a differential probe?

A probe’s attenuation factor (i.e. 1X, 10X, 100X) is the amount by which the probe reduces the amplitude of the oscilloscope’s input signal. A 1X probe doesn’t reduce or attenuate the input signal while a 10X probe reduces the input signal to 1/10th of the signal’s amplitude at the scope input.

Despite its high price, the active probe is the tool of choice when you need high-bandwidth performance. Active probes typically cost more than passive probes and feature limited input voltage but, because of their significantly lower capacitive loading, they give you more accurate insight into fast signals.
How is differential voltage measured?
Another way to measure voltage is to determine the “differential” voltage between two separate points in an electrical circuit. For example, to measure the voltage across a single resistor, you measure the voltage at both ends of the resistor. The difference between the voltages is the voltage across the resistor.
How do you measure a differential?
Measure the ring gear diameter. The ring gear is the largest gear inside the differential housing and normally faces the driver’s-side rear wheel. Using a tape measure or machinist’s ruler, measure the ring gear diameter. This identifies the differential — a Ford 9-inch or GM 7.5-inch — for example.
