What is a low Z input?
As the letter Z is the commonly agreed upon abbreviation for impedance, then Lo-Z simply refers to “low impedance.” This refers to the input or output impedance of a device (in our cases an audio device). Precisely what Lo-Z means, and how it is applied in the audio industry, is not entirely concrete.
What is a high Z input?
Hi-Z (or High-Z or high impedance) refers to an output signal state in which the signal is not being driven. The signal is left open, so that another output pin (e.g. elsewhere on a bus) can drive the signal or the signal level can be determined by a passive device (typically, a pull-up resistor). Synonyms.
What are high and low inputs?
The “Hi” input attenuates the input signal, usually by between 10-15dB (about half to a third the original volume). The “Low” input will not do this. Different guitars and basses produce widely varying signal levels.

Typically we only come in to contact with these generic terms on microphones (usually low cost microphones), some direct boxes, and certain types of line inputs (on mixing boards, some tape decks, etc.). A typical guitar, for example, generally needs to be connected to a Hi-Z input.
