Huaraz might seem a bit out of the way for backpackers doing the typical southern loop around Peru but it is absolutely worth the visit.
How many days do you need in Huaraz?
The Huayhuash Trek is at the top of my list if I ever return to Huaraz. It’s supposed to be an absolutely beautiful trek, but you also need up to 12 days to complete it! If you have tons of time to kill in Peru, the Huayhuash Trek is a great place to do it.

How do you get around Huaraz?
Getting around Huaraz is very easy, but it is important to choose accommodation close to the bus terminal. Most of the bus terminals are very near to the city center and shopping zones. This way, we could get everywhere on foot and did not need to use public transport in Huaraz even once, not even taxi.

The city of Huaraz can be reached by air and by bus. By plane: There is a daily flight from Lima’s “Jorge Chavéz” International Airport to Anta Airport which takes 60 minutes; Anta is located 15 minutes north of the city of Huaraz by car.
Can you fly into Huaraz Peru?
As with most major tourist destinations in Peru, Huaraz has an airport with connections to Lima. The airport at Huaraz is 14 miles (23k m) out of the city itself, so you’ll need to take a private transfer from the Huaraz airport (Comandante FAP Germán Arias Graziani Airport, which is at Anta), to Huaraz itself.
Can you swim Laguna 69?
We spent approximately one hour in total at the lagoon itself. Some brave people dared to jump into the lagoon and have a swim around. If this is something that you are planning on doing be sure to bring a towel and don’t forget about the long and cold walk back to the bus.
