Shell today rebranded First Utility as Shell Energy* and confirmed that it has switched all of its British residential customers to 100% renewable electricity. Renewable electricity will now be offered as standard to all existing and new customers, along with discounts at Shell service stations across Great Britain.

What is a fixed tariff? A fixed rate tariff is essentially a contract you enter into with your energy supplier. Under that contract, the rate you pay per unit of energy will be the same for a set period of time. This will usually be a year or 18 months, though it can be as long as two or three years.

Energy supplier First Utility has been renamed Shell Energy, and customers will now have 100% renewable electricity. If you’re one of the 700,000 customers who get their energy from First Utility, you won’t notice any change in the price of your energy tariff because of the rebrand.
Is a fixed tariff better?
Are fixed-rate tariffs cheap? Fixed-rate tariffs ultimately depend on the conditions of the energy market – if wholesale prices are high, fixed deals will be less attractive. Generally speaking though, if market conditions are good and you shop around, a fixed-rate tariff will be better value than a variable-rate one.

What happens at end of fixed tariff?
If you’re on a fixed rate tariff, your energy provider will automatically roll you onto its more expensive standard variable rate tariff after your tariff end date. This means that you will immediately need to start paying more for your energy, because the variable tariffs are dependent on market rates.
Can a fixed tariff be changed?
If your fixed tariff has already ended, you can still switch supplier or tariff. Contact your supplier to ask about their other tariffs or check how to switch supplier. You should complain to your supplier if they: don’t remind you about the end of your contract.
Should I move to a fixed energy tariff?
Experts advise that you should only switch if you can find a fixed deal that is less than 75% more than the current price cap, or no more than 15% more than the April price cap. Keep this in mind when you are researching energy suppliers and comparing different deals.
Is it worth switching to a fixed energy tariff?
It now may be worth switching if you’ve been offered a fix that’s no more than 35% above your current price-capped tariff, or 40% more if you very strongly value budgeting certainty.
