Taeniasis is the infection of humans with the adult tapeworm of Taenia saginata or Taenia solium. Humans are the only definitive hosts for T. saginata and T. solium. Eggs or gravid proglottids are passed with feces ; the eggs can survive for days to months in the environment.
How do tapeworm eggs look like?
They look like small moving “inchworms” as they are passed, but, when dried up, can look like small white to tan sesame seeds or grains of rice. Since these egg packets do not break open in the stool, tapeworm eggs are usually not identified in a routine microscopic stool examination.
