Until this year, as part of the Flete Estate, the beach was open to the public on only three days a week in the summer, preserving its unspoilt character and making it one of Devon’s best-kept secrets. It is now open every day.

In 1872 it was acquired by Henry Bingham Mildmay (d. 1905) of nearby Flete House in the parish of Holbeton and of Shoreham Place in Kent, a partner in Barings Bank. In 2016 it remains the property and main residence of his descendant Anthony Mildmay-White (born 1948), owner of the Flete estate.

In 2015 the owner of the Flete estate is Anthony Mildmay-White (born 1948), son of Lt-Cdr (Richard) John Bramble Mildmay-White (died 1969). He lives at Mothecombe House, a (comparatively) small historic Queen Anne mansion on the estate, built by John Pollexfen in the 1720s.

Mothecombe car park is open daily, last entry at 5pm (gates will be closed and locked at 7pm) and there is plenty of parking for up to 500 cars.
